Why Birmingham Is a Top Choice for First-Time Buyers in 2025

Why Birmingham is a top choice for first-time buyers in 2025

If you're a first-time buyer looking for the right place to set down roots, Birmingham should definitely be on your radar. According to a recent study by property portal Rightmove, the Midlands city has been ranked among the UK’s top 10 most sought-after locations for first-time buyers in 2025.

Birmingham Ranked 7th Nationally

Rightmove analysed search trends across the 50 most populated cities in Great Britain to determine where first-time buyers are most actively looking to buy. Birmingham came in at number seven on the list, with the average asking price for a typical starter home (two bedrooms or fewer) currently standing at £191,945.

That’s well below the national first-time buyer average of £228,551—offering great value in a city that’s rich with opportunity.

Why First-Time Buyers Are Flocking to Birmingham

Birmingham’s appeal lies in its unique combination of affordability, lifestyle, and connectivity. With:

  • A thriving jobs market,

  • Excellent transport links (including the upcoming HS2 rail line),

  • A vibrant mix of culture, nightlife, and green spaces,
it’s no surprise that the city is attracting attention from younger buyers and professionals seeking a strong return on investment.

A Broader Trend: The Rise of the Regions

The report also highlights a noticeable shift in buyer behaviour. First-time buyers are increasingly looking north, with Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield all making the top six. Glasgow claimed the number one spot with the lowest average price of £148,979, showing just how far budgets can stretch outside of London and the South East.

While Bristol had the highest average asking price in the top 10 (just above £283,000), cities like Liverpool, Nottingham, and of course Birmingham offer a more balanced mix of cost and opportunity.

Thinking of Buying in Birmingham?

With major investment pouring into infrastructure and regeneration, Birmingham’s long-term prospects continue to look bright. Whether you're buying your first flat or stepping onto the ladder with a small family home, the city has a lot to offer.

Bottom line: If you're a first-time buyer in 2025, Birmingham is one of the best places to start your property journey.
